What are the types of flywheels

Flywheels are mainly divided into two types: card type flywheels and rotary type flywheels. Card type flywheels are the mainstream choice for modern sports bicycles, while rotary type flywheels are mostly used for traditional or low-end bicycles.

The main types of flywheels

Card type flywheel (card fly)

Structural features: The flywheel plate is clamped onto the flower drum tower base through a groove, and the ratchet structure is integrated with the axle, adopting a plate design, which is lightweight and highly stable.

Specification classification: divided into Shimano specifications and Campagnolo specifications, with Shimano specifications being more common.

Application scenario: Widely used in mid to high end sports bicycles, supporting multiple speed changes (such as 6 to 10 speeds), and the smallest teeth can be made smaller.

Rotary flywheel

Structural features: Fixed by threads and flower drums, the ratchet structure is integrated with the flywheel plate and cannot be replaced separately.

Application scenarios: Commonly seen in single speed cars, old-fashioned variable speed cars, and low-end bicycles, with lower prices but larger weights.

Other classification dimensions

Speed difference: Flywheels are divided into 6 to 10 speeds according to the number of teeth, and the higher the speed, the higher the requirements for flywheel thickness and chain accuracy.

Size range: The diameter of industrial flywheels can range from a few meters to 185 meters, but bicycle flywheels are usually smaller.
